Masticating Juicer

Masticating Juicer

Welcome to Omega Juicer Reviews! I’ve done extensive research into the varied types of juicers while looking to choose one for my wife and I. We ended up buying the Omega Masticating Juicer.

Below you will find answers to the most common questions people are asking about the masticating  juicer as well as some little known tidbits I discovered that you might not know. This review covers the Omega 8006 and 8004 models (or Omega j8006/j8004 juicer).

The only difference between the two I found was color and price. The Omega j8004 is white and the Omega j8006 is chrome (and $40 to $50 more in cost over the white).

Masticating Juicer Review

Cleaning & Assembly

According to other user’s of the Omega masticating juicer these juicers are very easy to clean.  I’ve found this to be true as well. There are five basic interlocking parts to the juicer that require disassembly when cleaning. These parts are very easily reassembled. I looked at the  instructions for less than a minute and have never needed to refer to them a second time.

After juicing I simply put all of the parts into the sink, rinse them thoroughly, use the small “tooth brush” type brush that comes with the machine to vigorously scrub the small screen and I’m done in about 2 minutes.

All together from produce preperation (chopping) to cleanup most user’s say they spend less than 10 minutes to get 1 pint of juice. I typically get 2 to 3 ounces more than a pint in that same amount of time which easily serves two. Of course this will vary depending upon the type of veggie or fruit you use. I usually juice 3 to 4 cups of spinach, 1 beet, 3 carrots, 3 celery and an apple to get the aforementioned amount.

Problems With The Masticating Juicer?

Some people say the 1.5 inch chute is too small making it more work by having to cut the vegies into smaller pieces. Here’s what one person said, “chute is small so you have to chop a bit more (but in reality how much longer does it take to do 6 extra chops?)”.

I’ve found that carrots and celery rarely need chopping and practically feed themselves through the chute. I use one of those press down apple slicers for the apples (really quick and handy).Masticating Juicer

Another concern is jamming of the chute. This only happens when you force the pieces down the chute too quickly and overcrowd it. In fact the juicer will work faster if you don’t cram the pieces in. A gentle push with the plunger that comes with it is all that you will need.

If you feed too many mushy fruits and vegies through (berries, mango’s, watermelons, tomato’s especially etc…) the juicer may get backed up a little. however if you alternate with harder produce like crisp apples, carrots, celery and beets (my fav!) it’ll prevent any “backing up”.

Speaking of backing up, there is a reverse function if you need to use it. This comes in handy if you forget to alternate soft and hard. All you do is reverse the forward motion of the augur with the on off switch and it will unclog itself. Then you can just continue juicing.

Power

The Omega masticating juicer is known for it’s power among home users and commercial users. It won’t grind rocks into sand and you can’t use the augur to drill for oil, but it does do a good job on carrots, beets and even various nuts (for nut butters and the like).

The new 8004/8006 masticating juicers are equipped with a new heavy duty GE Ultem Auger which is 8 times stronger than older models that use the melamine auger. A 1/3 HP  motor powers the machine providing the equivalent of  2 HP crushing power for the gear.

The most powerful (buyer) attribute I liked as I researched these two particular models was the 15 year warranty. I really liked having the security that if anything broke or was faulty that I could just get it replaced at no cost to me!

No company is perfect though. Here’s what one customer said recently. ” The warranty slip that came with the juicer was for a 10 yr warranty. I called omega and was told not to worry about it. I pushed it though, even though I know it’s unlikely I’ll ever need the warranty, and was finally sent a 15 yr warranty slip.”

Additional Uses

The masticating juicer is also referred to as the “nutrition center”. It comes with every  accessory that is needed to perform other tasks such as making your own homemade pasta, frozen sorbets (I’ve done this with frozen bananas and berries, yummy!) nut butters, grinding your own coffee beans, soy milk and even baby food according to one user.

Masticating JuicerA good majority of the people who bought the omega masticating juicer purchased it with the intention of juicing their own wheatgrass. The machine does this very well.

I really like juicing spinach myself. I borrowed a different juicer from my neighbor once and all it did was shoot the leaves through into the pulp ejector. I got some juice, but it took a gigantic ( and expensive) bag of spinach to get it.

Cost

I was looking for the best “bang for my buck” and this masticating juicer stood out among the many blogs, forums and review sites I visited. Everyone really seemed to appreciate the value they got. My wife and I really wanted to make an investment in our health also. We get the most juice with the least amount of produce (cost). I found Amazon to have the best prices for the masticating juicer.
